Everything seemed to be in place. Toronto coach Pat Quinn had Ed Belfour in net, Mats Sundin as his captain, and the team had bolstered its lineup with Brian Leetch and Ron Francis at the trade deadline in March. This was going to be the year the Maple Leafs won it all. Instead it turned out to be a year just like the past 36 – a year that ended too early, a year with no Stanley Cup.
